But, as it turned out, this is not the case. To the delight of young gamers, scientists from The Karolinska Institute in Sweden has debunked this persistent myth. They found that modern games develop intelligence and make children smarter.
It should be clarified right away that the study did not study the impact of games on school performance, behavior, well-being and physical activity. Psychologists considered only the effect of digital entertainment on children's cognitive abilities and their IQ.
The experiment involved 9,000 boys and girls from the USA aged 9-10 years. Each child passed a psychological test, and in addition, the parents filled out questionnaires. Adults were asked to tell how much time their baby spends on computer games, TV and social networks.
The children were followed for 2 years, after which 5,000 were selected for a second study. It was found that the average child plays 1 hour a day. Children who spent more time playing games were distinguished by an increased IQ of 2.5 points. Scientists have not found a negative effect from watching television or using social networks, but it has not added to anyone's mind.
Dr. Torkel Klingberg, who led the project, focused on some important points:
So conclusions about computer games should be made carefully. Work on the issue will continue and the results of the study will be clarified. And in Japan has long understood what's what and is opening esports schools. In them, children easily combine study and games.
