Ronda — the city on the rocks and the soul of Andalusia
By Pictolic https://pictolic.com/article/ronda-the-city-on-the-rocks-and-the-soul-of-andalusia.htmlRonda is a small but very colorful Spanish town located in the north-west of the province of Malaga. On the official website of the city, it is called the soul of Andalusia – and for good reason, because its unique charm does not leave indifferent any tourist who has visited here. Colorful Spain would have lost a lot if it didn't have such an interesting corner, so visit Rondu is one of the mandatory tasks for any self–respecting traveler.
The main feature of the city is its location – it is a hill divided in two by a deep gorge, along the bottom of which flows the Guadalevín River.
Residential buildings are comfortably located on both sides of the gorge, so that from any side of the city you can admire the beautiful views of the surroundings lying below.
Ronda is famous not only for its incredible landscapes, but also for beautiful hotels, interesting sights and rich history.
The city was founded by the Romans in the VI century BC, and then the settlement was called Arunda.
During the period of its existence, the city managed to survive both the invasion of the Phoenicians, and the conquest by the Greeks, who gave it its modern name, and the Muslim period of rule. Each of these cultures has left something of itself in the walls of the city, so the architecture of Ronda is very interesting and rich in historical monuments of different eras.
Historically, Ronda was divided into three districts: the oldest of all San Francisco; La Ciudad, which has a large number of religious buildings and palaces; and the most modern El Mercadillo, which attracts visitors to the city with its souvenir shops. Each of these areas surprises tourists with beautiful sights — from ancient churches and monasteries to luxurious palaces with terraces descending to the gorge.
The main attraction of the city is the New Bridge over the Tagus Gorge called Puente Nuevo. It was built between 1759 and 1793, and its total height is 98 meters. It is noteworthy that earlier the interior of the bridge was used as prison cells.
There is also the Old PuenteViejo Bridge in Ronda, located a little lower along the gorge.
In Ronda, you can also see the Arab baths, which are supplied with water from the Snake Creek with the help of aqueducts, and the world's oldest Bullring, and a magnificent botanical garden with spectacular views.
The entire trade of Ronda is concentrated on the street Carrera Espinel (calle Carrera Espinel) – it is here that numerous tourists look in search of memorable souvenirs. But the main thing that you will take away from here is a vivid impression and a desire to come back here again.
