Prostitutes on floating barges in Utrecht

Categories: Europe

Until recently, one of the interesting sights of the ancient Dutch city of Utrecht was the “red light district" on houseboats. There are 40 licensed floating brothels with 143 legal "jobs" moored near the "Red Bridge" and along the river bank. Prostitutes in the windows of barges can be seen from cars passing over the bridge. Cars drive very slowly along the houseboats and prostitutes come out of their houses to the drivers in search of clients. This happens 24 hours a day. The traffic flow here is continuous, so the location of the brothels created transport problems. Now the municipality of Utrecht has decided to stop the outrage, and to ban prostitution. However, prostitutes were outraged that they were being deprived of a piece of bread and organized sit-in protests outside the city hall. By demonstrating, these women want to make it clear that they were literally thrown out into the street, while they did nothing wrong.
