On September 9, 1855, after the heaviest battles, the 349-day defense of Sevastopol ended. In connection with this event, every year in Sevastopol they remember and honor those who fell during the defense of the city and in the Crimean War of 1853-1856.

The Crimean War, also the Eastern War, was a war between the Russian Empire and a coalition consisting of the British, French, Ottoman Empires and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The fighting unfolded in the Caucasus, in the Danube principalities, on the Baltic, Black, White and Barents Seas, as well as on Kamchatka.

They reached the greatest tension in the Crimea. It was this military conflict that became the first in history to be documented by photographers.
