For many decades, Shanghai was like frozen in time, and then suddenly everything began to modernize in an attempt to keep up with the construction boom in the growing metropolis of Beijing. Trying to catch up, the authorities demolished entire neighborhoods of Shanghai, hundreds of thousands of residents were forced to leave their homes, and the traces of the past were erased.
Girard lived in Shanghai at the peak of these changes and captures the transformation of the city, which was happening right in front of him: two versions of Shanghai are trying to coexist in the same space.
