Lessons are mandatory to attend — if parents can refuse to have children attend "sex education" lessons, then all schoolchildren are required to study relationship education.
The Department of Education has launched lessons on "relationship education" in a number of British primary schools — they cover LGBT topics and the recognition of domestic violence. While parents can opt out of having their children attend "sex education" lessons, relationship education is a must-attend subject. In this regard, many parents began to protest.
The activist group Let Kids be Kids stated that relationship education classes should not be mandatory, because they can affect the religious and philosophical beliefs inherent in children in the family, and therefore "violates the rights of parents."
A representative of the Department of Education stated:
The Department of Education undertakes to respond to the group's request by July 31. After that, it will be decided whether the innovation will be sent for judicial review.
