And this is exactly the kind of work that NASA and ESA, together with the German Center for Aviation and Astronautics, provide. Space agencies are looking for volunteers who will experience the potential advantages of artificial gravity in conditions of long space expeditions.
The study, which will be conducted in Germany, will require only 24 participants – 12 women and 12 men aged 24 to 55 years. The volunteers will be placed in a supine position at a slight angle of 6 degrees, so that the legs are slightly higher than the head. Thus, blood flow to the extremities will decrease, causing muscle degradation.
The fact is that when astronauts spend a lot of time in space, muscles suffer first of all. Scientists who, for example, go to the ISS, must do daily exercises to keep the body in working order. However, NASA and ESA want to find out if artificial gravity can have any benefit for the human body.
Two groups of 12 volunteers, in addition to spending 60 days in a supine state, will periodically visit the centrifuge in the laboratory to ensure blood flow back to the limbs, simulating the effect of gravity.
Participants will do everything lying down – sleep, eat, take a shower. At the same time, they can watch TV, movies, play video games, and read as much as they want. Each volunteer will be paid 19 thousand dollars for the experiment.
Despite the fact that it really seems to be a dream job, it will be quite difficult to fulfill. Participants will face psychological difficulties due to the fact that they will have to stay in the same room practically and in the same position for 60 days, and then undergo rehabilitation. The test is not for the weak in spirit.
