Sometimes her upbringing can be disastrous. A leading British psychologist described three types of women who can raise a killer, and gave vivid examples. Dr. Elizabeth Yardley, director of the Birmingham Center for Applied Criminology, told us by what signs such mothers can be identified.
A leading British expert, Dr. Elizabeth Yardley, argues that not always a mother's role in parenting can be positive. Despite the generally accepted notions that a mother always wishes her child only the best, sometimes her influence can lead to sad consequences. In addition, the psychologist presented three types of mothers whose children may be prone to committing crimes.
Usually such women themselves grow up in conditions of hatred, often becoming victims of violence. When they grow up, they turn from victims into aggressors, repeating the behavior of those who bullied them. As a result, another generation of mentally disturbed children, brought up by mentally unbalanced parents, grows up.
An example of this type may be the mother of serial killer Fred West, whose difficult childhood affected his entire life. The world was horrified when it became known that the maniac raped his own daughters, tortured tourists, forced his wife into prostitution and burned the remains of victims in the basement of his house.
As mentioned in his criminal history, Fred grew up in a large family with six children. At the same time, the future maniac was his mother's favorite. But the file also states that she sexually abused him while his father raped Fred's sisters. The criminal repeated the same scenario when he married his second wife, Rose.
Dr. Elizabeth explains that the mother of the maniac bullied the children, creating a distorted system of values. Thus, in their environment, the abnormal became the norm.
Frightened by experiences from their own childhood, in which they experienced the poverty of their family, the intolerance of others, or were born out of wedlock, such women are obsessed with control. They set a goal for their children to achieve everything that they failed to achieve. They become mothers-managers who carefully plan the childhood and adult life of their children, constantly monitoring all their actions. Protecting the child from the outside world, mothers-supervisors demonstrate increasingly abnormal behavior.
This was the mother of the British serial killer doctor Harold Shipman, Vera. The woman struggled to cope with the difficult circumstances into which their life had thrown them. Wanting the best for her children, she urged them to be like everyone else. Vera hoped that thanks to this, her sons would grow up to be real men. Women of this type try to be good mothers in the eyes of society, but are very selective in the advice they hear from the outside.
Vera died of lung cancer when she was only 43 years old, but she left her son a sense of superiority, because of which he could not establish contact with anyone. He took care of his mother until her death, and was delighted with the effect morphine had on her. Harold began his studies at a medical school and, a few years later, killed more than 250 people by injecting them with lethal doses of morphine.
Dr. Elizabeth says that this type of mother is afraid of the condemnation that society may impose on their children. Such women live their lives following the rules, without crossing the boundaries of what is permissible, and try to meet the expectations of society. They are always quiet, passive and just go with the flow. Thus, when their children begin to disregard the rules and cross moral and legal boundaries, the fear of appearing bad in the eyes of others forces these women to act only the way they are used to - to deny and do nothing.
Two notorious murderers, Dennis Nielsen and Rose West, were raised by just such mothers. These women did not want to enter into a discussion. They were not ready to discuss the events that could lead their children to commit crimes.
Dennis' mother, Betty, said that one case was a turning point for her son. Perhaps he became a potential killer after his mother showed him the body of his beloved grandfather in a coffin. What he saw changed the boy's character, and later he admitted that he hated his mother. A maniac killed 12 young men he met in gay bars in Soho.
Rose West's mother, Daisy, turned a blind eye to her daughter's antics. And the future killer as a teenager walked around the house naked and masturbated with her younger brother. Such passivity of the mother led to terrible consequences in the future.
Some dads and moms in their desire to indulge all the whims of the child sometimes reach the point of absurdity. Here are 20 parents whose actions you will be ashamed of.
