As part of the Upcycling program for recycling old devices, Samsung has introduced a bitcoin mining farm based on forty Galaxy S5 smartphones. According to the company's idea, such a solution will allow breathing new life into outdated devices. Creative Lab, a division of the company engaged in the development of innovative solutions, presented its idea at the Samsung Developer Conference 2017 in San Francisco.

Samsung says that even eight smartphones of the Galaxy S5 brand can work with greater energy efficiency than a regular desktop PC, but the mining efficiency of such a farm leaves much to be desired.

Samsung representative Robin Schultz said that the Upcycling recycling program provides a second life to outdated gadgets that were previously simply thrown away, expanding their technical capabilities. In addition, recycling is an environmentally safe method of operating old technical devices.

The company believes that the problems of using outdated electronics are mainly related to software: old software does not support new applications. Apparently, Samsung has found a solution to make the hardware of the gadget work profitably when it is no longer able to support modern software. According to the information on the stand, smartphones run on a special operating system, but the company does not disclose any details about it.

The farm has become part of Samsung's program to "resuscitate" devices that users no longer need. In addition, Samsung specialists adapted the Galaxy S3 to service the aquarium with fish and programmed an old smartphone with a facial recognition system to guard the house.
