"Make Love Not War" Is Steven Meisel's Most Controversial Photo Project

Our post about Madonna's photo book Sex gives, we believe, a fairly complete picture of the mastery of American photographer Steven Meisel. This project, created in 1992, elevated him to the pantheon of fashion photography celestials. Steven still resides there.

Steven Meisel has been responsible for the covers of Vogue Italia for many years. And the September 2007 issue was marked by one of the master’s most conceptual and controversial photo shoots – Make Love, Not War.

Many of Meisel's advertising campaigns have caused a wide public resonance in society, and not always approvingly. The fact is that they were often too provocative, scandalous, literally on the edge.

"Make Love, Not War" became one of Meisel's most famous conceptual photo shoots. It featured Agyness Deyn, Raquel Zimmermann and other models. The publication was followed by a wave of criticism and misunderstanding, including accusations of attempts to glamorize the war in Iraq.

Nevertheless, this series went down in history as a masterpiece of fashion photography, the creation of which required the combined efforts of 60 outstanding industry specialists (including hairdressers, makeup artists, stylists).
