Before leaving this world, Mary saw South Africa, Italy, and Nepal. According to O'salley, he wanted to make the last months of his mother's life the best.
A loving son who arranged for his mother with Alzheimer's to travel around the world has revealed how the 18-month trip helped improve her condition in the final months of her life. Sean O'salley, 44, decided to take his mother Mary O'Neill away from Ireland for the winter, and they ended up traveling around the world for a year and a half. According to O'salley, the trip pleased his mother so much that during the trip, she began to walk and talk again.
Thanks to Sean, Mary was able to walk on the sands of South Africa, wander through the mountains of Italy and even take part in the festival of colors in Nepal before her death in 2019. Mary was diagnosed in 2013 at the age of 77. Sean was living in Rome at the time. He says his late mother is "the best thing that ever happened to him."
After Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Sean constantly traveled from Italy to Dublin to take care of his mother. But when the family began discussing moving her to a nursing home in 2018, Sean took matters into his own hands, feeling that this was by no means the best choice for her.
To begin with, Sean decided to take his mother away from the cold of the Irish winter to Nepal.
In Nepal, the mother and son liked it.
Holi is a popular festival in Nepal and India, also known as the Festival of Love, the Festival of Colors and the Festival of Spring. It is celebrated at the end of March in honor of the eternal divine love of Radha and Krishna. It also symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, the arrival of spring and the end of winter. According to local beliefs, Holi is the best time to meet friends and restore broken relationships.
After Nepal, in April 2018, Sean took Mary to his apartment in Rome.
In July, when it became too hot in Rome, the mother and son went to the mountains of Umbria.
Five months later, they headed to Cape Town, and despite Mary's deteriorating condition, Sean did everything he could to make sure she enjoyed the trip.
Mary died on May 24, 2019 in South Africa as a result of a lung infection.
According to Sean, he enjoyed spending a lot of time with his mother in her final months.
