Dennis Stock captured a thoughtful Audrey Hepburn in a car window, Louis Armstrong backstage at a concert in his underwear, Miles Davis playing jazz amid the smoke of a nightclub and many more actors and musicians, as well as the counterculture of bikers and California hippies in the 1960s.
Dennis Stock was born in 1928 in the Bronx. At the age of 17, he joined the ranks of recruits of the United States Navy. In 1947, he became a student of the brilliant Albanian photographer Gien Mili, who worked for Life magazine. The victory in the competition for young photographers organized by Life was the first serious achievement of Stock. After that, in 1951, he joined the Magnum Photos agency, with which he linked his creative life for decades.
Stock made iconic portraits of movie stars and musicians: Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Sidney Bechet, Gene Krupa and Duke Ellington. Stock published photos of virtuoso jazz performers taken in 1957-1960 in his book "Jazz Street". He achieved an amazing effect without the help of sound to evoke a sense of jazz, its place and time.

In the late 1960s, Stock captured the attempts of California hippies to rebuild society in accordance with the ideals of love. Artists, bikers, hippies, musicians and hitchhikers shared a common nonconformist approach to life, which attracted the photographer and inspired him to shoot.

Since the 1950s, Dennis Stock has held numerous seminars annually and has exhibited widely in the most prestigious art galleries in the world in France, Germany, Italy, the United States and Japan. His photographs have joined the collections of many major museums. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Stock worked on color photo books, emphasizing the beauty of nature through small details and landscapes. In the 1990s, he returned to his urban origins, studied the modern architecture of large cities. His later works are colored and abstract.

"Art is a clearly expressed manifestation of one of the aspects of life. I was lucky enough to look at most of my life through my cameras, which turns the path into enlightened experiences. My emphasis was mainly on positive reactions of human behavior and a strong attraction to beauty in nature," Stock said. In his later years, he gravitated towards color photography and changed the genre. Landscapes with lavender fields and tulip plantations attracted him with serenity. "In the end, we all strive for this," the photographer said.
