In search of Janabi: the life of a hippie in the South of Iran

The island of Hormuz situated in the Persian Gulf. It is home to approximately 6,000 people. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was a Portuguese colony. Over the last decade the island has become very popular among tourists. Travelers love it for the beautiful views and the friendly attitude of the local population to visitors.

Local residents receive income from tourism. Almost every family in Ormuz rents rooms to travellers, and men rolled tourists on the island, hand-carts and motorcycles.Many Iranians moved to Ormuz from other cities, opened a cozy coffee houses, restaurants and hotels. Hippie here stocking up on necessities for camping, take a shower and communicate with other travelers.

The island Hengam is located two kilometers from the southern coast of the island of Qeshm. During the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980-ies most of the locals were taken to the mainland, and the island was made a military base, which housed thousands of Iranian soldiers.

Later the UAE took a large number of refugees from Hungama, and most of them subsequently decided not to return from the island. As a result, there remained many abandoned buildings and gardens. In the village of keel now live only two families.

Those who returned after the war, settled in the village of New Hengam. Now it is home to about 500 people.

On Large is home to about 200 local residents who earn their living by fishing.

Until recently, the island attracted tourists, but a few years ago, adventurers discovered it in as an alternative to the crowded Hormuz.

But it looked like a hippie camp in Hawaii. It was antiobsessive where everything is different where clothing was optional, and any decisions taken in accordance with the "vibration" of the soul or of the body.
