And this is despite the fact that millions of habitable homes are empty all over the planet. But it is easier for those in power to solve this problem in a different way – by creating places where homeless people live locally, as they did in Los Angeles, California. There they founded a village for tramps with 103 small residential houses.
The construction of the settlement for the homeless of Alexandria Park" from scratch " took the state authorities 13 weeks. More than 200 people who do not have a permanent place of residence have found home comfort here. The houses are very small – their area is smaller than the kitchen in a modern apartment and is only 6 square meters. meters. But they have everything you need to live with minimal amenities.
Each such house has one or two beds and several shelves for personal belongings. Of course, with such an area, we are not talking about a kitchen, or even a bathroom with a shower. All amenities are located outside the compact buildings: kitchens, showers, toilets and laundries are located in separate buildings and are designed for general use.
But each house is equipped with air conditioning, without which it would be difficult in sunny California. Outside, most of the houses are painted white, but some of the new residents have already been repainted in bright, eye-pleasing colors. Alexandria Park has the layout of a real settlement – there is a central street and short alleys that depart from it.
Since the buildings are of the same type and very similar to each other, it is easy to get lost among the 103 houses of the village. To keep the locals from getting lost, the builders painted all the paths of the town in different colors. There are also conditions for keeping pets in Alexandria Park – a little away from the housing there is a playground for walking dogs.
For Los Angeles, the emergence of such a settlement is a small but confident step towards solving the problem of homelessness. The 2020 census showed that there are 66,000 people without a place of residence in the city of Angela. These US citizens live on the streets, under bridges, and in makeshift huts. Those who are lucky in life a little more, huddle in their own cars.
The large number of homeless people is due not only to the fact that it is warm in Los Angeles all year round, but also because the city has one of the highest prices for buying and renting housing in the United States. A person who has lost a house for some reason has no opportunity to buy or rent an apartment and remains out of life.
But do not think that someone kind and humane has arranged an attraction of unheard-of generosity and distributes houses to all those in need. On the website of the company that built the village of Alexandria Park, it is indicated that the cost of such economy-class housing starts from $ 4,900 (365 thousand rubles).
