This is kotatsu — a hybrid of the table and blankets. Despite its slightly awkward appearance, kotatsu — not some newfangled invention, and a classic item of Japanese furniture, which has existed since the 14th century. With the help of the Japanese, whose homes bad retain heat, keeping warm all winter. Kotatsu is a table frame, which is usually built into the heater. The frame is covered with a thick blanket, and on top of it installed the countertop.
Modern kotatsu, of course, is not heated by the coals, they are electric.
