By Pictolic https://pictolic.com/article/how-famous-cartoons-are-adapted-for-different-countries.htmlMajor studios are seriously approaching the localization of their product: every film, cartoon or TV series is adapted, that is, not just translated, but partially remade. After all, many nuances will be incomprehensible or even unpleasant to a foreign viewer without changes.
See a selection of five cartoons, the characters and details of which look different in different countries.
1. "Zootopolis" / Zootopia (2016)
In this cartoon, one of the news anchors was replaced. For the USA and Canada, the news was hosted by moose Peter Losini (a parody of the Canadian TV presenter Peter Mansbridge). In China, the elk was replaced by a panda. In Australia and New Zealand — for koalas. And in Japan - on the tanuki, a raccoon-like dog, symbolizing happiness and well-being in Japanese culture.
2. "Puzzle" / Inside Out (2015)
In this cartoon about emotions, the authors modified the scene in which the main character is fed vegetables. Especially for Japan, broccoli was replaced with green pepper. It turns out that this scene did not make sense to the Japanese, since Japanese children adore broccoli.
3. "Monsters University" / Monsters University (2013)
In the American version of the cartoon, Randall bakes cupcakes and decorates them with the inscription "Be my pal", that is,"Be my friend". Often animators do not translate such inscriptions into another language, but replace them with a picture that will be understandable for viewers all over the world.
4. "Toy Story" / Toy Story (1999)
In the second part of the Pixar franchise, Buzz Lightyear (in Russian translation — Buzz Svetik) gives an inspiring speech for other toys. In the original version, at this time, the American flag is flying behind him and the American anthem is playing in the background. For the international release, the flag was changed to a globe, and instead of the American anthem, the melody of One World Anthem was played.
5. "Planes" / Planes (2013)
The original heroine of the cartoon "Planes" — a Canadian named Rochelle-has as many as 11 localizations, depending on the country of rental. In Brazil, her name is Carolina, in Germany — Heidi, in Russia — Tanya. At the same time, each version is painted in the colors of the national flag.
