How a tiny village in Switzerland will become a huge hotel

Here is Corippo — the smallest autonomous municipality in Switzerland. Its population is only 12 people. Despite the isolation, the village, located in the picturesque Verzaska Valley, has the potential of a tourist destination. This is what the locals decided to take advantage of. Now the charming village will become a real hotel: each empty house will act as a room in a huge residential complex. In the middle of the 19th century, about three hundred people lived in Corippo, and two years earlier there were only 14 residents, now even less. The whole point is that the younger generation goes to the cities in search of education and work. For such a small village, such a population reduction is akin to a catastrophe. Therefore, the council of the three most respected citizens decided on cardinal changes for Corippo.

In 2018, the average age of Korippo residents is 75 years. Of the 12 residents, only one works, the rest are pensioners. Local residents are concerned about the fact that the village may soon disappear completely.

The project created by the village council provides for the transformation of Korippo into a tourist center.

More than 60 houses built of strong local granite are empty in the village. The floors in them are made of well-dried and reliable wood. Some buildings have been in "conservation" for more than 60 years, but they are still in excellent condition.

The project of the hotel provides for the transformation of the entire village into a full-fledged residential complex.

Soon these streets will become corridors, houses – hotel rooms, and the main square – a meeting place for guests. There is a restaurant on the territory of the village, which may well feed several dozen, and later hundreds of guests.

This concept of the hotel business is called "albergo diffuso", that is, "scattered or scattered hotel". It was first introduced in 1976 after the earthquake in Italy in order to bring life back to the villages affected by the elements. The first such hotel-village is located in the north-east of Italy, and this is the first experience for Switzerland.

The Corippo Hotel is already hosting guests. The first guests — a married couple — moved into the Casa Arcotti cottage at the end of July 2018. By the end of 2020, the administration is going to put other houses in order. The total capacity of the hotel in the future will be 120-140 seats.
