Last weekend, the largest collection of rare Hollywood photographs was put up for auction. Auction house Guernsey in New York is hosting a two-day sale of the Movie Star News Collection, which consists of three million photographs and negatives that reflect the history of Tinseltown.

The photographs were taken by Irving Clow, a Manhattan-based photographer who was the first to respond to the public's insatiable demand for images of movie stars. Clow, a former candy store owner, took up photography in 1939, for which he signed a contract with film studios, according to which he could photograph famous movie stars on film sets.

His camera owns images of "old Hollywood": Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn and Paul Newman. The Marilyn Monroe collection for sale includes over 600 photographs.
