There are even restaurants where you will be cheated with pleasure. But if you want not just exotic, but something really incredible, then go to the bar "Giger" (HR Giger bar) in Gruyere, Switzerland. This is without exaggeration the most impressive bar, if not in the world, then in Europe for sure.
There are two Giger bars in Switzerland. One, "Chur Giger Bar" (Chur Giger Bar), is located in the city of Chur. The second, "Giger Bar Museum" (Museum HR Giger Bar) — in Gruyere. It is about him, as the most spectacular and famous, that we will tell you.
The Giger Bar is located in the ancient castle of Saint-Germain, not far from the Hans Rudolf Giger Museum. If the museum in Kura was opened back in 1992, then this one has been working only since 2003. It is relatively small, with only 70 seats and it is never empty. Those who are in Gruyere is passing through, it's worth booking a table in advance, otherwise you may not get to the bar.
Everyone who enters the institution feels anxious. This is not surprising, because Giger is considered an unsurpassed master of inducing horror. The four-meter ceilings of the room are vaults similar to the spines of extraterrestrial beings.
Monstrous monsters and disgusting babies stare at the guests from the walls. The floor in the room looks like an electronic circuit board, and the furniture seems to be assembled from massive bones.
The guests of the bar are covered by a variety of emotions. Some freeze in delight, others cringe with fear, and someone shudders with disgust. You will not meet a person who does not experience strong emotions here. Even coming here for the second and third time, visitors invariably get a psychological jolt.
How did it happen to create such a disgusting and at the same time delightful interior? It's simple — Rudy Giger is Stephen King from the world of painting and sculpture. This man can be called the greatest connoisseur of human fears. In 1980, he even won an Oscar for visual effects. Of course, it was the cult fantasy thriller "Alien", the continuation of which is still being filmed.
When director Ridley Scott planned to shoot "Alien" in the late 70s, he faced serious difficulties. He had money, great actors and a great idea, but there was no main monster. Everything that the artists and decorators offered Scott was boring, unafraid and hackneyed.
When screenwriter Dan O'Bannon brought Scott a book with Giger's works, Giger's Necronomicon, he immediately realized that this was what he needed. The director saw the best monsters generated by the gloomy genius of the Swiss artist. But most of all he was interested in the work with the name "Necron IV". It was taken as a basis, creating the image of an alien monster-a xenomorph.
We agreed with the author very quickly — Giger loved interesting projects. He gladly agreed to be responsible for the costumes and scenery for the film. It was a large-scale and interesting work. The artist and his team worked seven days a week for 5 months. The result exceeded all expectations.
Years later, the artist and designer were offered to embody ideas from his paintings and sculptures in the interior of one and then another bar. Hans Rudolf Giger died in 2014, but the Alien universe he created lives its own life. He left behind a huge number of works and simply beautiful things. Paintings, sculptures, bas-reliefs, furniture, dishes and even guitars and microphone stands.
Giger, who became a classic during his lifetime, inspires thousands of people around the world with his work. And many of them rush to the Giger Bar Museum to feel its special atmosphere.
