From corsets to thin stripes — how underwear has changed in 100 years

Today, women do not seek to hide as much of their bodies as possible under numerous layers of delicate silk, now the motto is — the less, the better. Nowadays underwear is an integral part of the appearance.
We decided to recall all the decades of the last century, each of which meant a transition to something new and beautiful.
1900s — stockings, pantaloons, corsets, petticoat, blouse and second skirt — all this was worn under outerwear.
The 1910s. The first decade of the century saw the debut of more open and provocative underwear (a deeper neckline, pantaloons became shorter). Such underwear was associated with courtesans for the first time.
The 1920s. Such a large-scale historical event as the First World War affected all spheres of human life, including fashion. The demand for more practical and comfortable clothes has grown. There were dresses that did not require a corset. It has been replaced with combinations and bras.
The 1930s. The trend towards simplicity and convenience is developing even more.
Since the 1930s, stockings have become an integral part of the image of women. This change was provoked by the appearance of shorter skirts.
The 1940s. Typical underwear for this time is a bra, panties and a petticoat.
The 1950s. Christian Dior presented his New Look style, featuring classic silhouettes — a thin waist, lush breasts and rounded hips. This decade was characterized by the appearance of cone—shaped bras - it was this form that was considered the most attractive.
In the middle of the XX century, an easy interpretation of the corset appeared, which favorably emphasized the waist. Black underwear has also become fashionable.
The 1960s. The shape of bras becomes softer. One of the trendsetters was the young Brigitte Bardot — the undisputed style icon of the decade.
Prototypes of modern push-up bras were invented — small built-in tabs inflated and lifted the chest.
The 1970s. Minimalism is becoming a symbol of this decade and a new sexual revolution. Mary Quant creates a collection with mini skirts.
Thinness is becoming a fashionable requirement. Underwear of the 70s is simple — it emphasizes a slim figure and does not restrict movement.
The 1980s were characterized by the revival of luxury underwear. Fashion houses vied with each other to satisfy the most refined taste. The classic black was replaced by feminine, luxurious silk and lace underwear.
The 1990s. Underwear items became even more revealing and left less and less room for imagination.
The boundary that existed between outerwear and underwear has become almost invisible. Women stopped hiding corsets and bras.
Currently, there are no revolutionary changes in the fashion and underwear industry. Fashion houses devote all their time to improving existing designs, bringing them to perfection.
