For some reason, the couple convinced their loved ones to quit their jobs, promising to share an inheritance that she did not have

As you already understood, the couple lied and, as soon as the unpleasant truth surfaced, ran away from the city, leaving their parents and poor friends with nothing.
Most of all, Ashley's parents were probably shocked, who are now forced to sell their house to pay off their debts. They happily left their government jobs and were looking forward to the keys and security codes from the promised £5 million eight-bedroom house. But when they came to their son's lawyer to sign the documents and complete the deal, they were told that the house simply did not exist.

Mrs Coombs, 58, Ashley's mother, told The Sun: "Everyone told us we should wait, not quit, but Stevie was so convincing. Moreover, they have nothing from this deception, I don't understand why they did it."
Ashley's father adds: "Now everything has fallen on us at once: a car loan, all debts and bank loans that need to be paid. And we have only one way out — to sell our house."
Other victims, namely close friends, Ashley and his wife were also persuaded to leave their jobs. They promised someone to buy a new house, and someone to pay for infertility treatment.
The couple explained their unexpected wealth by the fact that Stevie-Nia's grandfather died of cancer and in his will indicated her as the sole heiress.
The couple even showed this will to friends and relatives. Of course, the document was forged, and grandfather never suffered from cancer.
Initially, the police said that there was no corpus delicti, as the couple did not receive anything. However, recently 700 pounds disappeared from the account of Ashley Coombs' father, so now the lying couple is wanted in connection with fraud charges.
