Iceland is often called the land of waterfalls. And for a reason — there are about a hundred beautiful waterfalls on the territory of Iceland, ranging from such a giant as Dettifoss and ending with the majestic Svartifoss, they are the most recognizable and popular attraction of the country.

Iceland's climate is greatly influenced by the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Due to the warm Atlantic Ocean, rains and snowfalls often fall on the territory of the country, while the proximity of the Arctic is the reason for the formation of large glaciers that melt in summer and fill many rivers with water on the territory of the country. It is these streams of water that collide with irregularities throughout the island, created by diverging tectonic plates, and form waterfalls of incredible beauty.

We decided to take and show you the most memorable waterfalls of Iceland.

Gullfoss In translation, the name of the waterfall means "golden waterfall". It is one of the most popular attractions in Iceland.

The waterfall itself is located in the canyon of the Khvitau River in the southwest of the country. The height of the Gullfoss is 32 meters, and the waterfall consists of two "steps" — 21 and 11 meters high each, which are rotated to each other at an angle of 90 degrees.

Dettifoss Dettifoss is considered the most powerful waterfall in Europe, it is located on the territory of the National Park Yekulsaurgluvur in the river Yekulsau-au-Fjedlum.

The average water consumption is 193 m3/sec, the height is 44 meters, and the width is about 100 meters. The waterfall is so powerful that the vibration emanating from it can be felt even with a hand applied to the stones surrounding it.

Skaugafoss is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland with a width of 25 meters and a drop height of 60 meters. Skougafoss is located on the Skougau River in the south of the country. Thanks to the huge amount of splashing water falling from a great height, on sunny days you can always see a rainbow.

Godafoss means "waterfall of God" in Icelandic. The waterfall was so named because the inhabitants of the country, when adopting Christianity about a thousand years ago, threw all pagan idols into the stormy waters of Godafoss.

Godafoss is located in the north of the island on the Skiaulfandaflout River. Its width is 30 meters, height is 12 meters.

Seljalandsfoss By the way, Seljalandsfoss is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland. It is located between two other waterfalls — Selfoss and Skaugafossom, on the Seljalandsau River.

Due to the deep indentation behind the waterfall, the Seljalandsfoss can be viewed from all sides, and it is better to photograph it at dusk, when the colors become the most colorful.

Hreinfossar Hreinfossar or "lava waterfall" is a series of waterfalls formed by small streams extending for 900 meters from a lava field called Haldmundarhreina.

The lava field was formed as a result of the eruption of one of the volcanoes under the glacier Laungjekudl. The waterfall flows into the Khviutau River

Dinyandi Waterfall is also known as Fjallfoss (translated as "roaring"). It is a series of waterfalls with a total height of 100 meters.

The upper waterfall attracts the most attention because of its unusual trapezoidal shape.

Hengifoss Waterfall is located on the Hengifossau River in the municipality of Flotsdalshreppur in the east of Iceland. The third highest waterfall in Iceland is 128 meters. The waterfall looks very unusual due to the surrounding rocks, whose basalt layers are separated by thin layers of red clay.

Bruarfoss Bruarfoss or "waterfall bridge" is one of the most beautiful and, it turns out, unknown waterfalls in Iceland. Even many Icelanders have not heard of this amazing place. The waterfall cannot be seen from the road and there are no signs leading to it. The last proof is that Wikipedia doesn't know about this waterfall either. Bruarfoss Waterfall consists of hundreds of small streams and waterfalls that fall into a deep canyon of icy blue color.

The waterfall got its name thanks to a natural bridge made of natural stone, which was located on the river near the waterfall in ancient times. Legend has it that in the XVI century, a butler from the city of Skaulholt ordered the destruction of this bridge so that tramps and beggars would not enter the city. Then, however, the butler soon after drowned in the river.

Svartifoss Waterfall Svartifoss or "black waterfall" is located in the Skaftafedl National Park in the south of Iceland. Svartifoss is famous for the hexagonal basalt columns surrounding it.

It is believed that this landscape with columns inspired many Icelandic architects. The most obvious evidence of this is the Hallgrimur Church in Reykjavik and the National Theater.

Aldejarfoss Waterfall is located in the north of Iceland in the northern part of the Sprayngisandslade road. One of the distinctive features of Aldejarfoss is the contrast between black basalt columns and snow—white waters, indicating a glacial source.

Hyaulparfoss The name of the waterfall translates as "waterfall of help". Hyaulparfoss is a unique double waterfall flowing from a large pool where two rivers join.
