In the 1960s, a group of radical youth appeared in the New Zealand town of Hawke's Bay. They didn't ride bikes, but they quickly acquired all the other attributes of thug bikers: patches, club colors and a rather creepy and cruel process of joining a gang. They became known as the Mighty Mongrel Mob (literally "the Great Gang of Mongrels"), and today it is the largest gang in New Zealand, numbering about 30 groups on two islands. Getting access to the "personal" life of the gang is not so easy, but photographer Jono Rothman managed it. And thanks to his patience and fearlessness, we can now look at the colorful members of this mighty gang.

New Zealand is considered one of the safest countries in the world. This is, in fact, what it is, but this does not mean at all that everything is always quiet and quiet there, and nothing ever happens. Gangs, brawls and showdowns are phenomena that have always been and will be in any society. And New Zealand is no exception in this sense.

Gang members look creepy, but at the same time bizarre. The combination of a biker jacket, a swastika, a sieg heil and an English bulldog in a German helmet seems strange.

But Maori and Polynesians are outrageous in principle. This is especially true of the category that openly seeks to oppose itself to Pakeha – white people.
