Bella Tucker from New Hampshire learned to play the piano after she contracted a deadly virus at the age of eight. Bella's 48-year-old father Rich Tucker said that because of meningococcemia, a severe form of meningococcal infection, her skin turned purple and Bella was on the verge of death. She miraculously survived, but had to amputate all four limbs to save her life.
After eight months spent in the hospital, Bella took up playing the piano. Every spare minute she practiced by pressing the keys with the stumps of her hands.
Bella's ordeal began on Easter Sunday 2010. When she woke up, she felt pain.
The doctors told Rich that Bella might not be able to cope. But the little girl found the strength and was able to survive. Slowly, the purple color disappeared from the face and abdomen, but the limbs became darker and darker, until they turned black at all.
The doctors had no other choice but to amputate the legs above the knees and the arms up to the elbows. Since then, Bella has been fighting for the opportunity to do things that other children can, such as drawing and playing the piano.
Bella made her stage debut in front of hundreds of other children and their parents at a talent contest. The event was organized by the No Limits Foundation, which supports children who have lost limbs. Mary Layton, the founder of the foundation, said that there was silence in the hall when Bella played. The listeners were crying.
