The art world discovered his work when he was in his sixties, and the photographer managed to arrange an exhibition of his works at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Lartigue began by documenting the pastimes and habits of his company of rich friends in Paris, sports and aviation. All his life he has not parted with the camera. He was friends with French superstars, but also took thousands of pictures of his family, wives and mistresses. His works exude incredible warmth and attractiveness.
Lartigue is best known for his black-and-white photographs, but he simply adored color film and experimented with the autochromic process back in the tenth and twenties. In the late 1940s, he switched to Ektahrom. His color works are surprisingly fresh and bright: French village life, his women, famous friends (Picasso, Fellini) and pieces of his travels shine through the canvas of time and give the impression that all this was only yesterday.
