12 90s Trends We Thought Were Gone Forever, But They Keep Coming Back

If you lived in the 90s, you probably fell victim to at least a couple of fashion trends from that era. Blue and glitter eyeshadow, contoured lips, oversized jackets, and tie-down shirts. If you thought you would never hear from them again, you are wrong, because they keep coming back to life.

We at Pictolic were surprised to learn that not all the beauty and fashion trends that seemed bold and sometimes awkward in the 90s are gone forever. Some of these trends still have fans and followers, and here's what they looked like then and in the last few years.

1. Blue eye shadow.

Blue eyeshadow was a 90s classic. We have seen girls with blue eyelids on TV, in magazines, and at school parties. This trend looked even more attractive when blue eyeshadow was paired with a blue dress or blouse. It looks like today's celebrities have a hint of blue in their makeup too, just like Dua Lipa in the photo above.

2. Visible lip liner.

Here is another makeup trend from the past that comes back to life from time to time. We know from today's makeup professionals that lip liners that go beyond their natural shape can make lips look fuller. This is something we did back in the 90s and we chose a lip liner that was much darker than the actual lipstick so that the line would really show.

3. Glitter eye shadow.

In the 90s, glitter was everywhere: on clothes, on skin, lips, and eyelids. Although we don't see as many things today, some celebrities like to put a lot of emphasis on their eyes. Dua Lipa, for example, is often paired with sparkly eyeshadows in bright colors, and we love it!

4. Black eyeliner all around.

Smokey eyes in the 90s looked darker and heavier due to the universal black eyeliner. Every now and then we see a similar makeup with the effect of "raccoon eyes". In the right photo above, Kristen Stewart paired a smokey eye with versatile black eyeliner and glittery eyeshadow, and we got that strong 90s vibe.

5. Haircut under the pot.

The bowl haircut was popular in medieval Europe and got its name because of the simplest way. They literally put a pot on a person's head and used the rim of the pot as a guide for cutting hair. This unusual method has returned to fashion more than once in history. In the 60s the Beatles brought it back to life, in the 90s we saw Leonardo DiCaprio, Halle Berry, and other celebrities wear it, and in 2019 Charlize Theron reminded us of this hairstyle again.

6. Visible hair clips.

While modern beauty trends promote discreet and invisible hair accessories that highlight the beauty of hair, back in the 90s it was all about showcasing our hair ties, barrettes, and thick headbands that were not only visible but sometimes decorated with flowers, shiny butterflies, and other attractive things. Those of us who love this vibe still show off our hair clips when we feel like it.

7. Chokers.

If you scroll through celebrity photos from the 90s, most of the women in these photos would probably be wearing some kind of choker. Modern fashionistas seem to be nostalgic for this jewelry trend, and chokers are back in all their variety.

8. Suits oversized.

In those days, costumes (even tailored for women) did not have to fit the figure. Big shoulders and baggy cuts were the hallmarks of suits, jackets, and coats in the 90s, and we still see such cuts in modern fashion.

9. Shirts and blouses with ties.

Do you remember how we tied blouses and shirts at the waist or under bras? This little fashion trick never seems to go out of style, and many of us still use it to add a new twist to our good old clothes and make them more attractive and risqué.

10. Checkered suits.

The iconic yellow plaid suit was worn by Alicia Silverstone in the 1995 film Clueless still inspires many designers today. When we saw Olivia Palermo at the 2018 fashion show, we immediately thought of Alicia and the movie. Did you have the same feeling?

11. Slip dresses.

In the 90s, slip dresses were everywhere: at fashion shows, on red carpets, in films and magazines. Modern celebrities also often choose slip dresses and even wear them to big events, such as award ceremonies.

12. Leather coats.

The two photos above were taken almost 25 years apart, but just look how similar these outfits are. Leather never seems to go out of style, and the good thing is that nowadays we can choose eco-friendly leather alternatives and enjoy the look and feel of good old leather to the fullest.
