However, in some cases, the characters prove that they are not just cool - they are practically immortal. It doesn't just happen to supernaturally immortal slasher monsters or supernaturally impenetrable superheroes. In many films, there are completely ordinary mortals who turn out to be extremely unkillable.
While this seems to be most common among action heroes - because you can't have a franchise without a solid main character - the image of a virtually indestructible character spans every genre, from drama to comedy to sci-fi horror.

1. John Wick.
Played by Keanu Reeves, this retired hitman is a virtual killing machine that can cut down entire squads of mercenaries with quick tactical maneuvers and near-impossible combo headshots. In some cases being unkillable means taking an insane amount of damage and ignoring it - which Vic also manages - but sometimes it just means being an unstoppable force of nature that can take down as many opponents as is thrown at them.
2. James Bond.
With a screen career spanning over 26 films in total, including two non-canonical productions, James Bond is unkillable both on screen and in terms of an intellectual property cash cow. Throughout his long career as a secret agent, Bond faces numerous injuries, traps, and illogical circumstances that should have made him dead, but only made him uncomfortable. In Skyfall, Bond (Daniel Craig) gets shot by a high-velocity sniper rifle that knocks him off a moving train and knocks him tens of meters into a river - and that's at the beginning of the movie!
3. Indiana Jones.
In the course of his adventures, Jones escapes a snake-filled cell, jumps out of a plane on an inflatable raft, defeats hundreds of Nazis, survives the literal magical wrath of God, fights more Nazis, and bypasses traps protecting the Holy Scriptures. Grail. And all this was before the much older and more disappointing Indiana Jones survived the nuclear blast by hiding inside a lead-lined refrigerator in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
4. Bride, Kill Bill.
Beatrix "The Bride" Kiddo (Uma Thurman) is a vengeful super-assassin trained by the world's greatest martial artist and turned into a weapon of destruction. In the Kill Bill saga, the Bride can't be killed in many ways, but most notably, she gets shot in the head with a point-blank pistol and survives.
5. Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
The charismatic, rum-loving pirate Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has built a reputation for escaping death. In addition to stories of him being thrown onto an island and training sea turtles to get him to safety, we also see him escape the gallows at the last moment, fight off a horde of undead pirates, and literally face a giant Kraken.
6. Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible franchise.
Ethan Hunt is a man who runs very fast to face danger and risks his life again and again to save the world. From riding a train while being chased by a helicopter, to hanging off the side of a plane as it takes off, to being tormented, kidnapped, betrayed, and abandoned like a rag doll.
7. Ellen Ripley, Alien franchise.
In Ridley Scott's sci-fi/horror masterpiece, "Alien" Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is a simple ensign of USCSS Nostromo in the year 2122 when she and her crew come face to face with a terrifying alien threat known as a xenomorph. When a monster kills her crew - and she's attacked by the psychotic android Ash (Ian Holm) - Ripley manages to do what everyone else on the ship doesn't: survive. After destroying the Xenomorph, she falls into a cryosleep, but wakes up 50 years later and is forced to match the wit of the numerous Xenomorphs in Aliens.
8 Wet Bandits, Home Alone franchise.
The traps that McCallister sets up don't end up deterring the crooks, but these traps were meant to completely wipe them out. Harry's head is set on fire by a blowtorch, he falls down a flight of stairs, gets hit in the face by a full swinging paint can, and falls repeatedly. Meanwhile, Marv falls down an icy staircase, gets hit in the skull with his own crowbar, pierces his bare feet on a rusty nail and broken jewelry, and burns his face with an iron. Almost everything that happens to them should have ended them, or at least left them in a long-term coma, but instead, horrific accidents seem more like annoying inconveniences.
9. Boris Razor, Big Jackpot.
Russian arms dealer Boris Yurinov (Rade Sherbedzhia) in the 2000 Guy Ritchie comedy Snatch is known by a variety of garish nicknames, including "Boris Razor" and, most appropriately, "Boris, fuck you." As a former KGB agent with a sinister reputation, his near-superhuman resilience is on display time and time again throughout the film, in which we see him wounded, beaten, gunned down, and hit by cars before finally getting shot in the Bar Corridor - Tony Bullet in the Teeth (Vinnie Jones).
10. Marv, Sin City.
Throughout Robert Rodriguez's 2005 adaptation of the graphic novel, Marv constantly takes bullets, is attacked by a serial killer, fights and takes out dozens of cops, and proves himself to be a living tank. He finally meets his death after confessing to his wrongdoings and being electrocuted - and even that turns out to be much more difficult than expected.
