10 historical films in which costume designers coped with the task perfectly

History lovers often make claims to costume designers for shooting historical paintings: either the fabric is not from that era, or the cut is wrong… But in these films, the costumes from a historical point of view are simply flawless!

In the film "Hamilton", based on the popular Broadway musical, the main role was played by Lin-Manuel Miranda (left). The musical is based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, the founding father of the United States and the founder of the country's financial system. The costumes worn in the musical, in style and cut, fully correspond to the style of the late XVIII century.

Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) is here in the evening dress she wore when she danced with Mr. Darcy. The action of the novel and film "Pride and Prejudice" takes place in the Georgian era (1714-1830), and women at that time often wore long dresses similar to the one on the right, made in 1797. Women's costumes in the film are admired: according to the customs of that time, they are decorated with a lot of small details that are exactly reproduced by costumers.

"Little Women" (2019) won the Oscar for Best Costume Design, and this is not surprising. The film required about 75 historical costumes, each of which took almost 40 hours to make. In the photo, Amy, played by Florence Pugh, is in a casual dress that completely stylistically coincides with a real walking dress from 1865 (pictured on the right).

The painting "Elizabeth's Coronation" served as a source of inspiration for the coronation scene in "Elizabeth" (1998). On the left is the coronation scene in the film, on the right is the image of Elizabeth I in the picture from which the costume was copied. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design in 1999, but won the prize only for best makeup — a pity! The work of costumers is worthy of the highest prize.

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) tells the story of geisha Chiyo Sakamoto (Ziyi Zhang) for about 30 years. The film explores the life of geisha before World War II, as well as the problems they faced after the war. On the left is Ziyi Zhang in "Memoirs of a Geisha" compared to a real geisha from Japan before World War II. The costume is just perfect!

The film "The Great Gatsby" (2013) features a number of stunning costumes from the 1920s period, exactly repeating the fashion of that time. The film quite rightly won the 2014 Oscar for Best Costume Design. In the photo — Daisy Buchanan, played by Carey Mulligan, in a headdress, widely known in that era as the "gypsy cap". On the right is a young woman in a 1929 photo in the same headdress.

The film "Two Queens" (2018) tells about the relationship between Mary, Queen of Scotland (played by Saoirse Ronan), and her cousin Queen Elizabeth I (played by Margot Robbie). The costume design for this film was supposed to reflect the fashion of England and Scotland at that time — and the costumers brilliantly coped with the task. In the photo on the left, Saoirse Ronan as Queen Mary of Scotland - compare her with the real queen on the right, and all questions will disappear by themselves.

Marie Antoinette (2006) is a historical drama about the life of Queen Marie Antoinette of France. About 70 different historical costumes were created for Kirsten Dunst, who played Marie Antoinette in the film. Although some liberties were taken with the colors of the dresses, the cut of all the clothes was historically accurate. Here Kirsten Dunst is wearing a blue dress similar to the one worn by the real Marie Antoinette in 1783.

Mad Men is a television series set in the 1960s and 1970s. The action of the series took place for many years, which means that costume designers had to constantly create new things to keep up with the current fashion trends of that period. On the left in the photo is Betty Draper, played by Generi Jones, in a typical dress worn by housewives in the 1960s, on the right is a real dress from 1959.

The action of "Anna Karenina" takes place in the 1870s. In the 2012 film, Anna Karenina is played by Keira Knightley, and Count Alexei Vronsky is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. A lot of historical claims were made to the film, but the costumes in it are made flawlessly. Look at the photo of the scene on the left: the costumes of the heroes exactly reproduce the style of clothing that was common at imperial balls at the end of the nineteenth century. For comparison, the photo on the right: this is the dress worn by Empress Maria Feodorovna in the 1890s.
