For most people, these things are so familiar that no one remembers when they appeared and how. It wasn't always as easy as it is now. We present you a dozen historical "first times" that have changed our lives forever.
First Magazine, 1731
The Gentleman's Magazine began publication in London in 1731. Its last issue was published in 1903. Editor Edward Cave was the first to use the word "magazine".
First photograph, 1826
The author of the first photo was the French scientist Joseph Nicephore Niepce. He took the picture at his family's home and called it " The view from the window in Le Gras."
First X-ray, 1895
In 1895, a physics professor named Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen conducted experiments with electrical discharges in vacuum glass tubes. One night, he noticed a glow that wasn't coming from fluorescence or visible light sources. He called the open radiation the "X" rays.
The first crossword puzzle, 1913
Arthur Wynn was supposed to come up with entertainment for the eight-page comic book section in the New York World edition. For the Christmas number, he created a thing that he called " word-cross "(literally translated as"word-cross"). Little did Arthur Wynn know then that his invention would become a craze for many people around the world.
The first nude scene in a movie, 1915
Actress Audrey Munson played the lead role in the film "Inspiration" (Inspiration). It is believed that this is the first film where there is a nude scene with one of the main actors.
The first motel, 1925
The world's first motel was the Motel Inn in San Luis Obispo, California. It was built by Los Angeles architect Arthur Heinemann. He called his creation a motel, shortening the phrase "motor hotel"("car hotel"). A night at that motel cost $ 1.25.
The first full-length color cartoon, 1938
One of the most remarkable Walt Disney cartoons is "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", the first full-length animated color and sound film. The duration of the cartoon is 83 minutes.
The first ATM, 1967
A convenient way to withdraw cash from an account through an ATM was invented by John Shepherd-Barron. The idea came to him while he was taking a bath. He offered his know-how to the British bank Barclays, which immediately agreed to implement it. The first ATM model was designed and installed in London in 1967.
The first digital camera, 1975
The world's first digital camera was invented by Kodak engineer Steve Sesson. The camera took black-and-white images and was the size of a toaster. The images were saved to a cassette, and each frame took 23 seconds to record.
First music album cover, 1938
Alex Steinweiss was only 23 years old when he came up with the cover art for the Columbia Records album. The album Smash Song Hits by Rodgers and Hart ("The Greatest hits of Rodgers and Hart") was the first in the world to have an original cover. Before that, the records were sold in ordinary brown paper envelopes.
