The big question in October is "Trick or treat?" Do you want to be tricked, or are you willing to hand over a treat? Most people tend to go with the latter, but what about the unstated third option: hunker down away from everyone else and enjoy a cozy night in? Halloween does not have to be scary in every aspect. There are pumpkin-carving contests, fun festivals, adorable decorations, and most importantly, there are fantastic movies to be watched all season long.
While everyone else is waiting for Freddy, Jason, or some other psychotic monster killer to emerge and scare the pants off them, you can choose to enjoy your evening with a Halloween movie that is not scary at all. Between modern family-friendly Halloween films and the older movies that just happen to hold a place in your heart because of the nostalgic feeling to them, you can make this holiday season one that is lighthearted and fun rather that gruesome and gory.
Check out these 10 Halloween movies that are not scary at all.

1. Hocus Pocus & Hocus Pocus 2
Hocus Pocus is at the top of the list when it comes to what people choose to watch during this witchy season. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy will forever hold a place in our hearts as the kooky yet determined Sanderson sisters. The first film is nostalgic as fans watch the trio get brought back to life and chase three kids and an adorable talking cat around the town. Nothing beats the sass that that Billy Butcherson (Winifred's zombie crush) brings or the reality checks from Binx the talking cat.
Then, there is the sequel, Hocus Pocus 2, that was released on Disney+ that gives more insight to the sisters' background. Yet again, they are resurrected from the dead, but this time, Winifred's power trip leads to more chaos than even she can handle.
2. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
If you have little ones and are crunched for time, choose this animated TV special instead of a full-length Halloween film. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown portrays the Peanuts gang on the night of Halloween; Linus decides to sit in a pumpkin patch waiting for the almighty Great Pumpkin to arrive, and the rest of the kids go about their plans to trick-or-treat and attend a friend's party. Linus manages to convince Lucy, who has had a crush on him forever, to join him in the pumpkin patch as he waits for the mythical creature to appear.
The other kids make fun of his beliefs, but for the most part, they just leave him to do what he wants. Between the subtle theme of faith and the humorous antics that everyone, including Snoopy, gets into, this television special is far from scary.
3. Halloweentown Franchise
Disney definitely made a lot of us believe that, when we turned a certain age, an eccentric and old relative would come to visit and tell us that we were a part of a magical society. Unfortunately, it looks like that was a lie for just about everyone except Marnie Piper in Halloweentown. The four films follow Marnie's coming-of-age story after she and her siblings learn that they are a part of a family of witches.
Naturally, things don't go so smoothly in the magical world of Halloweentown, and it is up to Marnie and her family to always make things right again. From the wholesome and festive feeling to the lessons learned, this cute series is worth a watch this Halloween season.
4. Casper Meets Wendy
While the original 1995 Casper is a little dark with its plot, Casper Meets Wendy is more fun and lighthearted. In Hilary Duff's first major film, she portrays a young witch named Wendy who is supposedly destined to become the greatest witch of all time. When she and her aunts discover that a warlock is after them due to Wendy's destiny, they decide to lay it low at a hotel that just so happens to be the place Casper and his three uncles are staying.
Casper and Wendy quickly become friends due to both of them feeling like outsiders within their own families, but things start to get shaky when the relentless warlock finds out where the young witch is hiding.
5. Coco
6. Twitches
Twin girls were born on Halloween night in the magical world of Coventry in Twitches, but because of an evil force known as the Darkness, the girls were taken away to a land without magic. There, they were adopted separately, but as fate would have it, exactly 21 years later, the girls would reunite and learn about their destiny.
Alex and Camryn (who were respectfully named Artemis and Apolla at birth) learn that they have magic pulsing through them that will help in defeating the Darkness back in their home dimension. The girls are hesitant for a myriad of reasons, but when they realize their birth mother is in trouble, they do everything they can to defeat the evil forces.
7. The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Nightmare Before Christmas has long been debated whether it is more of a Halloween film or a Christmas film, but true fans will confidently say it is both. Henry Selick combined the two holidays into this stop-motion animation film, and the rest is history. Jack Skellington has been the leader of Halloween Town for quite some time when he realizes he is bored with their routine holiday.
In search of inspiration, he stumbles upon a door that leads to Christmas Town. Jack then gets it in his head that he can be Santa Claus for during the big night, but things clearly do not go well for the skeleton in the red suit.
8. Practical Magic
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman star in Practical Magic as the witchy sisters Sally and Gilly Owens who were raised by their aunts in a small Massachusetts town. As the girls grew up, they realized they wanted different things in life; Sally wanted to lie low with her daughters and prevent them from ever practicing magic, and Gilly wanted to experience life and go on adventures.
The sisters naturally parted ways, but as conflicts go, the ambitious sister found herself in a bit of trouble with an abusive man. Gilly and Sally reunite to solve one problem, but they soon realize they need the help of their aunts and a few other women in town if they want to be rid of all dark magic for good.
9. Monster House
A lot of spooky things can occur on Halloween night, but never in a million years did a few kids think that a house would get possessed and begin eating children who wandered into its yard for their missing items. In Monster House, DJ and Chowder witness the house across the street devour DJ's babysitter's boyfriend, then the pair manages to save a girl the following day from the same fate.
Learning that there is potentially a way to "kill" the monster house, the trio decides to venture inside and destroy its heart. While this may sound scary, watching three children try to problem-solve a ghostly situation is actually quite comical and fun.
10. Coraline
After moving to a new place, the titular character in Coraline feels like she is often neglected and left to her own devices because her parents are constantly busy. Rather than seek out other kids to play with, Coraline finds different things directing her back to a small door that leads to the Other World.
Coraline instantly grows fond of her Other parents because of how much they do for her, but when she realizes her Other mother wants to make Coraline's stay permanent, the young girl becomes frightened. All of a sudden, she finds that she must save her real parents from her Other mother and help free the ghost children that have been trapped in the Other World for years.
