That's not the case with The Game Of Thrones, and some characters from the book were still done dirty in the 8 seasons of the series.

The main problem is that the TV adaptations focus on showing how the characters act and rarely rely on their inner monologues that explain their beliefs and the logic that helps them derive conclusions. And if the book were filled with the inner musing of the characters, then the shows just lack it.
This part of the character is hard to translate onto the screen because it's just thinking, while shows are all about acting, and acting out the thought process is not that easy. If the show tries to do so, then it's often ridiculed for overexposing things, so it's really hard to find the right balance in the adaptations of beloved characters.
Then again, you can view the TV show as an advertisement for a book and pick it up to meet the characters in their original form.
