What's beneath the water of Niagara: as repairing the famous waterfall
In 1969 bubbling water stream, collapsing on the American falls (with two fellow "Horseshoe" and "Veil" — it forms a set of waterfalls called Niagara), at the time, had shrunk to a modest trickle. A few years before this happened a massive landslide and piled at the foot of the waterfall rocks, from a height of 30 meters. Fearing further erosion, which threatened to completely destroy this wonder of nature, in the engineering corps of the U.S. army decided to time it to dry to strengthen the fissures of the soil. The American part of Niagara falls bare for five months.
In June, the Niagara river has taken on a new direction, passing on canadian soil. For this, the military built a dam out of the 27 thousand tons of stones. They were taken to the place on huge trucks, which in total took to make 1,200 trips from the quarry and back.
While the nearby Horseshoe falls, took extra water volume, the experts examined the river bottom and secured with special bolts, a number of faults in order to slow down the process of erosion. And also strengthened the slope and constructed an earth dam.
After the waterfall was drained from the bottom of it were found two corpses. Only two. Considering how active citizens at all times ends here suicide or indulged in all sorts of madcap adventures, there could be a lot of a graveyard. But the water had carried the bodies out of sight.
The exposed waterfall caused among the tourists no less excitement than before. Especially zealous, ignoring the ban, ran behind the fence and enjoyed the feeling that jumping on earth for 12 thousand years was hidden beneath the foaming water. At the same time collecting coins, which in large numbers were scattered on the bed.
Work was completed at the end of November. The dam exploded and the water again rushed to the ledge with a speed of 170 thousand cubic meters per minute. Us media reported that the recovery of the waterfall watched 2650 viewers.
