What office workers looked like in the 1960s
In the 1960s, Lawrence Luckham, an employee of the largest and legendary telecommunications corporation Bell Labs, photographed his colleagues at their workplaces. Now, more than half a century later, we can look at what office workers and office life looked like at that time.
1. Personal computer, polka dot dress, handbag
2. A mini-computer of that time, the Honeywell DDP-516. It was used to connect dozens of computer terminals via a 50KB modem line. Today, this function is performed by network switches (jarg. switch)
3. And here are the terminals
4.
5. Head of the computer department with an oscilloscope
6. The desktop of an extravagant production manager
7. A computer room, which today is called a data center. It was located in the basement of the building for security reasons. There are no natural light sources, only the decoration made by the staff.
8. IBM Super-computer. This "monster" had 1 MB of RAM, 648 MB on a hard disk and cost millions of dollars!
9. Fooling around with an IBM super computer
10. Apparently, there was no dress code at Bell Labs Corporation. They dressed "briskly"
11. Data backup center on reels with tapes. Probably makes backups?
12.No one really bothered with the design of the premises. Everywhere there are white walls and the same type of desks in the workplace. But the people are cheerful. In the photo – a programmer
13. The office was decorated on its own. The author and his creation on the wall
14. Library on tapes
15. Tea break.
16. Demonstration room. Presentations were held here, slides were shown from the projector
17. Computer operators
18. A new prototype of a computer terminal
