The world's largest abandoned train stations: Buffalo and Detroit
Writes Sergey Sigachev aka periskop: “Those who read the post about the train trip in the United States saw that Sergey photographed the abandoned remains of the old Buffalo mega-station in the art deco style (Buffalo Central terminal, 1929-1979) along the way. This is the second largest abandoned but not demolished station in the world. The first one is in Detroit (Michigan Central Station, 1913-1988), it is also intact, but fenced and isolated from free access, as far as I know.
Under the cut, I posted a selection of photographs of these monsters - fragments of the Great Railway Era, which remind the descendants of what happened in the history of the United States and when these stations were working at full capacity. There is also a photo of the majestic Penn Station, which was completely demolished in 1963.
Buffalo, Buffalo Central terminal
1. Buffalo Central Station, painting. The evening train leaves for New York.
2. View from the active line.
3. I wish I could take a walk here! A bit like the abandoned paths of Warsaw Main, but many times larger and with a majestic building.
4. General view. From this side the lines have been dismantled.
5. High-rise building.
6. The insides are also inspiring.
7.
8. Central light hall with ticket offices.
9. This photo baffled me. There is a photographer, Spencer Tunick, who photographs naked people in the most unusual places. These naked people volunteer for such photo installations and flash mobs.
10. Romantic painting. Nostalgia for the Great Railroad Era is quite strongly developed among many Americans.
11. The central hall in the best of times, which are in the past.
12. ... and now.
13. One of the galleries.
Detroit, Michigan Central Station (the world's largest abandoned station)
14. General view. Compared to the peak of abandonment (mid-90s), now it looks noticeably better.
15. In HDR. Romance!
16. Location in urban topography.
17. Main entrance.
18. Inside.
19. One of the VIP lounges.
20. Departure of the station line into the river tunnel.
21. Passage over the tracks, on the sides - descents to the platforms.
22. General view of the building from above.
And finally, the destroyed Pennsylvania Station (1910-1963)
23. And the landing stage of Penn Station from the inside. I have never seen anything like it anywhere. Chinese terminals are large, but much simpler and more functional.
24. Now it’s clear why THIS (the modern Penn Station of 2014) is now called “rat catacombs” by American rail fans?
