Veterinarians explained why dogs eat feces and grass
Dogs, like wolves, belong to the order of predators. But this does not mean that animals support classic eating behavior. Domestic dogs are omnivorous, sometimes even too much. We are not talking about pets who adore pickled cucumbers or potatoes. It will be about eating "good boys" feces and vegetation.
Eating feces by a dog often bothers their owners, especially not too experienced ones. Many see this as a perversion of taste or even signs of illness. But veterinarians say that this is a completely normal phenomenon, although unpleasant, but not pathological. So, a dog can eat feces for the following reasons:
Although eating feces is not considered a deviation, you need to make sure that the animal does not do this. So a dog can get infected with an infectious disease, pick up parasites or get food poisoning. If it was not possible to follow the dog and she managed to "have a snack", give her plenty of water to rinse her mouth. You also need to feed the animal tightly.
All dogs eat grass, but science cannot unequivocally answer the question why they do it. BelleHaven Animal Medical Center veterinarian Kathy Nelson says so:
But there are several assumptions that have a completely scientific appearance. Some veterinarians believe that eating certain types of plants can cause an animal to vomit. They are looking for such herbs if they experience unpleasant sensations in the gastrointestinal tract. There is also an assumption that a herbivorous dog becomes from hunger or boredom.
There are more interesting versions. Some experts are sure that the matter is in the gastronomic tastes of the pet. In other words, the dog eats grass simply because he likes it. It is unlikely that a dog will eat a poisonous plant, but problems still happen. If the animal overdo it, it may well earn an upset stomach. Plants that have recently been treated with pesticides are also dangerous.
By the way, eating feces by dogs is one of the reasons why these animals are considered unclean in many cultures.
