On Saturday morning, one of the locals, walking with his son in the area, noticed a strange smell coming from the statue, which stands in the Barcelona suburb of Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
Looking inside through a crack in the leg of the stegosaurus, the man and his son noticed the body and immediately notified the police, who immediately arrived at the scene.
The 39-year-old man who died inside the statue is missing, his family told police earlier. According to the police, there is no criminal background in his death.
After the discovery of the body, three teams of firefighters were called to the scene, who opened the dinosaur's leg and used a crane to pick up the corpse. Local media reported that the man, who has not been named, was trapped upside down after falling into a hollow statue while trying to reach a phone he had dropped inside.
Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy and have not yet released the exact cause of the man's death or how he ended up inside the statue. The statue itself, which was installed to advertise a local movie theater, was removed from the street.
