The story of poverty and deprivation of this 24-year-old Chinese woman swept through the media and shocked the whole world. Wu Huan ate only rice and chili peppers to save her sick younger brother, who was suffering from a severe mental disorder.
This lasted for five years — recently Huan died in the hospital from complications caused by malnutrition. Read more about the life of this selfless girl below.
Wu Huan was born in 1995 in a remote area of Guizhou Province, which is considered the poorest in China. When the girl turned 4, her mother died, and by the age of 18 she lost her father. Huan's younger brother, suffering from a mental illness, was left in the care of Huan.
At first, my brother and sister were helped by relatives. In addition, she had an annual scholarship of 7000 yuan (about 62 thousand rubles) and a monthly allowance of 300 yuan (about 2.7 thousand rubles).
Most of this money went to my brother's treatment. The remaining funds were barely enough to make ends meet, so Wu Huan had to go on an extreme diet. The girl's diet mainly consisted of rice and pickled chili peppers. According to media reports, Huan lived on about 2 yuan a day (about 17-18 rubles).
In October of this year, the girl began to have health problems and she was admitted to the hospital. At the time of hospitalization, the student weighed only 22 kilograms! Doctors diagnosed her with heart and kidney problems that arose as a result of prolonged consumption of a minimum amount of food. Unfortunately, it was not possible to save Huan. This story caused a wide resonance in society and forced Chinese President Xi Jinping to issue a decree on the eradication of "absolute poverty" in the regions by the end of 2020. According to statistics, about 150 thousand people live below the poverty line here. Their annual income is 627 yuan (5.6 thousand rubles).
