Skull Day, or Day of the Dead, in Bolivia

Categories: Nations |

Every year in early November in Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, the dead are remembered. Moreover, in Bolivia, their memory is honored in a very special way - the inhabitants of this country keep the skulls of close relatives at home, and on Skull Day they bring these terrible talismans to the cemetery chapel, where they are blessed. It is believed that this will bring good luck in the future.

All images were taken at the main cemetery in the Bolivian city of La Paz by Reuters photographer David Mercado.
