Singapore street food vendor gets Michelin star

Not every beautiful and expensive restaurant serving delicious dishes claims to be included in the famous "Red Michelin Guide", the most famous and influential of the restaurant ratings. Just imagine how surprised Chan Hong Meng, the chef of the Singapore restaurant with street food Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle, was when his place of work was awarded an honorary Michelin star. In his tent, he sells noodles and rice with chicken.

51-year-old Malaysian Chan, who has been working in the culinary industry for 35 years, says that he was simply stunned when restaurant reviewers invited him to the award ceremony. "When I received the invitation, I very much doubted the reality of what was happening," said Chang Hong Meng.

"I asked them if it was a joke, because why would Michelin reviewers suddenly come to my tent. I have never heard of a street vendor being awarded this prestigious award. But they told me that they only evaluate the quality of the food, and not the institution itself. I never thought that a street food vendor could reach the world level," he shared in an interview with Reuters.

Chan serves about two hundred visitors a day, and huge crowds of people regularly line up at his tent. His signature chicken in soy sauce with noodles or rice, which costs only about 100 rubles per serving, is now the cheapest Michelin-starred dish in the world.
