Painting on books from the Saint Petersburg artist
Artist Ekaterina Panikanova creates multi-layered paintings on the pages of old books, lecture notes and textbooks. Masterpieces of Catherine blur the boundaries between such art forms as painting, installation and collage.
Catherine Panikanova was born in St. Petersburg in 1975, graduated from the art School of the Museum of the Hermitage, now lives and works in Rome.
Today we will show you a series of works called Errata Corrige (translated as "mistakes"), where the canvases of the old yellowed books and notes Catherine recreates his most vivid childhood memories.
Artist Ekaterina Panikanova says: "In my work I use mainly second-hand books, found at flea markets in Petersburg, Rome and other cities and countries in which there are.
Mostly old textbooks and notebooks, technical literature, which has already served its purpose and often its fate is to become waste paper.
It is important for me that the book had been read, was in the hands of someone, this book is a personality, a portrait of her former owner (or owners).
Often on the sidelines there are marks, figures, inscriptions, some lines underlined. For me that is what is of interest.
Reading texts, looking at the illustrations, I intuitively connect them into a puzzle that serves as background for the future image".
