One day in the life of a polar hermit

In a stunning visual project called No Signal, photographer Brice Portolano shares wonderful stories of people who decided to escape away from the urban lifestyle in order to reconnect with nature.

"Arctic Love" is the first of four photo essays in this series. It tells about a girl named Tinya, who lives 290 kilometers from the nearest city. Portolano captured her distinctive lifestyle in the wilderness, where she keeps 85 sled dogs and lives for her own pleasure on the incredibly beautiful Finnish land.

Tinya survives well away from civilization: she cooks in a wood-burning stove, lights the house with candles, and draws water from the river, in which she has to break ice every morning. This is her life, and she admires the peace of her solitude, which she found in the silence of the wild.

Tinya is quite happy with the way of life, in which only animals and wildlife make up her company. She is looking for inspiration in the Arctic wilderness, explaining it this way: "I don't need all these material values. Nature provides me with everything I need."
