"Not a boy and not a girl": in Canada, for the first time, a child was given a document without sex determination

In Canada, for the first time in history, a medical card was issued to an infant without specifying gender. This was done at the insistence of the baby's parent, who does not consider himself either a man or a woman and asks to be called "they".

8-month-old Cyril Doty from British Columbia (Canada) may be the first child who, according to the documents, will be of indeterminate gender.

Now Cory is seeking to obtain a birth certificate without gender identification, as he believes that the sex of the baby cannot be established in infancy and a visual examination by doctors is not enough for this. As the child's parent explained, this is done so that Cyril can choose his gender identity independently in the future when he grows up.

Cory Doty is a public figure and activist of the "Gender-Free ID Coalition", which seeks to eliminate any mention of the gender of children from official documents. "They" believe that the child can determine the gender incorrectly and after growing up it will be difficult for him to change all the documents. Initially, Cory wanted the child not to have a line about gender in the documents, but now in Cyril's medical record, instead of the mark "male" or "female" in the "Gender" column, there is a Latin letter "U", which means "undefined".

Cyril Utley was born in November 2016, in the home of friends of Corey in the province of British Columbia. Because of this, officials did not have the opportunity to determine and certify the sex of the newborn.

"After the birth, the doctors saw my genitals and made an assumption based on this, who I would be. And this assumption has haunted me all my life. Gender identity cannot be determined only by the genitals. The doctors' assumptions in my case turned out to be wrong, and I had to change a lot in my life," Cory Doty told reporters.

As the CBS News channel notes, following the British Columbia authorities, the decision to mark the child's gender in medical records in this way can also be taken in the provinces of Ontario and Alberta. At the same time, British Columbia officials have so far refused to issue a birth certificate without a gender mark.
