Beauty contest "Miss America" may seem an absolute anachronism, but he really was of great importance. In 1921 Margaret Gorman was a promising student of Junior courses Western High School (now school of the arts Duke Ellington School of Arts), when her photograph was sent to the city's popularity contest of the Washington Herald. She was selected as one of six finalists, and then Margaret won, receiving the title of the first "Miss Washington." The prize for winning was a trip to Atlantic city and part in the second annual city beauty contest as the guest of honor.

Out Margaret has returned the people's favorite, received the title "inter-city beauty" and "the Most beautiful bathing girl in America." Agree, both titles sound so-so.

Its success caused a sensation in Washington, and all the Newspapers wrote about it. In one of the notes describes how Margaret received a telegram from one of his friends from high school. It said, "Congratulations. Don't get cocky". To top it all off it turned out that he sent a telegram to the beneficiary, and the girl had yet to pay 35 cents.

Unfortunately, the Washington Herald in 1922 was awarded the title of "Miss Washington" to the other girl. But the organizers of the contest in Atlantic city decided to combine two of the strange title of Margaret in one and call it "Miss America". Thus was born the title — a year after his first owner won it.
