Kate Barry was incredibly talented, but also unhappy. Born into a bohemian family, Kate was doomed to success from the very beginning. She did not conquer either the screen or the stage, but became famous for her beautiful and natural portraits of famous actresses. Having ended her life by flying out of a window, this talented woman left behind many expressive and impressive photographs. She was a trusted photographer.
Kate was born in London in 1967 in the family of actress and singer Jane Birkin and composer John Barry. Her parents separated when Kate was three years old. She lived with her mother in France, she saw her father only 10 years later, when Jane broke up with Serge Gainsbourg.
Kate has been the center of everyone's attention from a young age. I took up photography in the mid-1990s.
Barry was a troubled teenager. She had to undergo treatment for drug addiction. She then founded a charity in 1994 to treat drug addicts and opened the first free residential complex of its kind in France.
Family connections turned out to be very useful for Kate - they allowed her to penetrate the world of the rich and famous. She became adept at photographing people, especially women, especially actresses. They felt relaxed and open in front of Barry's lens, so she was able to capture their naturalness and beauty.
Among the celebrities she photographed were Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Sophie Marceau, Monica Bellucci, Tilda Swinton, Helena Bonham Carter, Carla Bruni, Sofia Coppola, Charlotte Gainsbourg (Kate Barry's half-sister).
The natural style of her work appealed to many editors. She has photographed for Cosmopolitan, Elle, Le Figaro Madame, Paris Match and Vogue magazines. She also worked on advertising campaigns for Lipton Tea, Pierre Cardin and Dior Perfumes.
Kate Barry also photographed stunning landscapes. When asked to compare herself to a landscape, she replied: "A nice little bush shaking in the wind somewhere on the Scottish or Welsh moors."
Barry passed away in 2013. She committed suicide by jumping from the window of her apartment in Paris.
