Judges prefer camels with pronounced lips, which led to the use of botox by scammers.
Botox injections, facelifts and other cosmetic changes designed to make hunchbacked participants more attractive are strictly prohibited during the competition. The jury members determined the winners based on the shape of the head, neck, humps, clothes and posture.
The judges of the festival, held in the desert northeast of the capital Riyadh, said that this year they are using "specialized and advanced" technology to identify cosmetic procedures.
The camel beauty contest is the main event of a large-scale festival, the program of which also includes camel races, sales and other holidays, where thousands of dromedaries (single-humped camels) usually gather.
The festival aims to preserve the role of camels in the Bedouin traditions and heritage of the kingdom, even though the oil-rich country is moving forward with the implementation of megaprojects. Camel breeding is a multimillion-dollar industry, and similar events are taking place throughout the region.
