Bruce Weber started his photography career not as a photographer, but as a model. "I became a fashion model because I wanted to see how the photographers I admired work," Bruce later said. And there was really something to see - suffice it to say that it was shot by Richard Avedon himself. Having gained experience, Weber began to photograph himself, but his path to the photographic Olympus was not always strewn with roses — he had to push his elbows pretty hard.

"No one liked my photos, no one could understand why I take pictures of men," he recalled. The first person to recognize him as a talented photographer was photographer Diana Arbus: "I met Diana when I was being chased by a lot of trouble… And she was one of the few people who liked my photos. She advised me to take a course in photography by Lisette Model."
