John Swannell was born in London in 1946. At the age of 16, he became an assistant at Vogue Studios, then worked for David Bailey for four years before setting up his own studio. Swannell spent the next 10 years traveling the world, photographing for publications such as Vogue, Harpers & Queen, The Sunday Times and Tatler. It was at this time that Swannell acquired his unique style in photography.
Swannell is also known as the official photographer of the royal family. During his career, he managed to make portraits of almost all its members, and Princess Diana in 1994 personally asked him to take her and her sons.
