Egypt sentences 4-year-old boy to life in prison
Last week, an Egyptian court sentenced a 4-year-old child to life imprisonment, finding him guilty of numerous crimes, including murder. Ahmed Mansour Sharara, who was not even present in court, was convicted along with 115 defendants who participated in a January 2014 protest in support of President Mohammed Morsi that erupted into violent confrontation and pogroms. The authorities, at least some representatives, were well aware of the young age of the accused and, accordingly, that the boy simply could not physically commit all those crimes. In 2014, the police came to arrest Ahmed, but when they saw the child, they took away his father instead. However, two years later, the court found the little boy guilty of four murders, eight attempted murders and acts of vandalism.
The father of the child was kept in prison for 4 months, and after his release, the man had to flee the city. But after the dad heard about his son's verdict, he made up his mind and appeared on local television on Saturday asking for help. A man with a sleeping Akhmed in his arms asked for justice, so that the court would cancel its decision, and during an emotional speech, he could not help crying.
But now, thank God, the family of young Ahmed can breathe a sigh of relief - the other day the court recognized the verdict as a mistake. The authorities apologized, citing the difficulty of keeping track of all the details when passing judgment on 116 defendants. Ahmed's family was promised that both the boy and his father were safe. Well, long live justice.
