Some conservative members of parliament suggested that during the repair, the clock should still ring once — at midnight on March 29, 2019, as a sign of the final separation of the UK from the European Union.

The 96-meter Elizabeth Tower was built in 1859 and for a long time was simply called the clock tower. The tower received its current name in 2012, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
