On December 29, a patient of the Hacienda HealthCare clinic, located in Phoenix, Arizona, suddenly gave birth. Before that, the girl had been in a coma for 10 years, none of the hospital staff even suspected about her pregnancy.
Immediately after the birth, an official investigation began. The clinic has changed the order of contact with patients: now a male employee can enter the ward only in the presence of a female colleague.
According to the results of the investigation, it was found out that the father of the newborn baby is a nurse Nathan Sutherland. The suspicions of the police were confirmed by DNA analysis.
A 36-year-old man has been charged with raping a woman who was in a helpless state. Phoenix Police Chief Jeri William called this crime "inhumane," and it's hard to disagree with her. Sutherland himself did not comment on his act in any way, using The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
During a press conference, Police Chief Jeri William said that, in addition to "standard police methods," DNA analysis had to be used to identify the perpetrator. He confirmed the paternity Nathan Sutherland, however, the defendant's lawyer insists on another independent examination.
According to the clinic staff, none of the staff suspected about the woman's pregnancy. According to the records, the last examination of the patient was conducted in April 2018.
Immediately after the sudden delivery of the patient, the head physician of the hospital voluntarily left his post. Later, against the background of the scandal that broke out, two more doctors who worked with the patient left the clinic — one of their own volition, the other as a result of dismissal.
Former head physician Bill Timmons
A representative of Hacienda HealthCare issued a statement in which he expressed his "sincere regrets to the family of the victim" and promised to strengthen the safety of patients in the hospital. The clinic also said in a statement that nurse Nathan Sutherland had a valid license issued by the state of Arizona and extensive professional experience.
Nathan Sutherland with his sister
Nathan Sutherland appeared in court on January 23. Before clarifying all the circumstances of the case, the man was released on bail in the amount of 500 thousand dollars (more than 33 million rubles). The next hearing will be held on January 30. Until then, the accused will wear an electronic bracelet so that the police can monitor his movements.
Sutherland's lawyer David Gregan stressed that his client had not previously been accused of illegal actions. He also insisted on conducting an independent examination that will help confirm or deny Sutherland's paternity.
As for the newborn, he feels well, but his future fate remains unknown. The victim's mother said that her daughter is not intellectually sound and cannot speak. The woman makes minor movements with her limbs and head, reacts to sounds and changes her facial expression.
